Residential
The Coach House
Tankerton, Kent
We were commissioned to design a new house on the site of a former coach house belonging to a large neighbouring property. The brief was for a contemporary home with bright, open living spaces overlooking the garden and a neutral palette throughout, modern, while sitting comfortably alongside its historic neighbour.
In form, the building takes its cues from its surroundings, complementing the scale and character of the adjacent property while the dark-clad façade set above a warm brick base gives the house a confident street presence. The twin gables echo the roofline next door without mimicking it. Full-height sliding glazing to the rear opens the living spaces directly onto the garden, with polished concrete floors running throughout the ground floor.
We enjoyed designing the interior on the project, including bespoke joinery and the specification of all finishes, colours and furniture. Whilst the main living spaces follow the neutral palette of the brief, we introduced carefully chosen moments of material richness including terracotta tiles, olive green paintwork, oak joinery and terrazzo flooring to give the bathrooms and ancillary spaces their own distinct character.
